Jewel in the Crown

Environment Design Consultant - Malaysia and the Hyatt design team pay tribute to the Le Corbusier style of architecture with their design for the new Hyatt Regency Chandigarh.

Located near the serene foothills of the Shivalik range of the Himalayas, the Hyatt Regency Chandigarh attempts to leave its mark in the architecturally rich city known for its design and planning by Le Corbusier. Inspired by Le Corbusier´s style, the hotel has thoughtfully planned its aesthetics with an attempt to pay an ode to the master architect.

Architectural beauty
The hotel has a sun-shading exterior, also called the sun breaker, a feature that deflects sunlight. Glass and stone has been smartly incorporated into the structure for maintaining ambient temperature, irrespective of the weather. While the façade cladding technology that is used is called dry cladding, along with Dholpur stone with double glazed window with High Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) and Visible Light Transmitted (VLT). While designing the façade, Leadership in Energy and Environ¡mental Design (LEED) certification requirements were kept in mind. The façade includes 200mm thick solid block, sealed air gap, Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP)/ stone cladding and 75 mm under deck insulation with high albedo paint and metal deck roof. Double glazing of higher SHGC and higher VLT has been used to minimise heat gain and maximise day lighting.

Culturally inspired
The interiors of the 211 generously sized rooms are characteristic of the Le Corbusier style of design. All the rooms including the 25 suites and 7 cabanas use Le Corbusier´s design elements including contemporary furniture, Punjabi culture inspired artwork and colourful carpets. All rooms overlook the serene city scape, pool or landscape gardens and offer the latest services and facilities to meet the needs of today´s business and leisure traveller.

More than 36,000 sq ft of flexible meeting and event facilities has been created in the hotel for events. This includes an 8,711 sq ft pillar-less ballroom and sound-insulated meeting rooms that can be linked together to create a unique conference capsule cap¡able of accommodating multiple seminars simultaneously. An exclusive entrance to the ballroom caters to the cultural needs of a traditional Indian wedding, making it an ideal marriage venue. The beautiful terrace leads down to a manicured lawn.

Dining with tradition
Hyatt Regency Chandigarh features five restaurants and a bar that span the culinary globe yet showcase décor that is rooted in Indian culture. For instance, Urban Café, the multi-cuisine restaurant, features a wall that displays various types of tablas or the hotel´s vibrant and chic 24-hour café, Browse, which flaunts milk cans in different colours.

Piccante, the hotel´s signature Italian restaurant, offers authentic regional delicacies from Campania and Sicily in a vibrant and stylish atmosphere, complete with a private dining room that overlooks the beautiful rooftop terrace and an al fresco seating area. The temperature-controlled outdoor swimming pool comes with a pool bar.

Dressed predominantly in wooden tones, the décor and furnishing of the Hyatt Regency Chandigarh is modern yet finds its way back to the roots. The stylist lobby staircase is a perfect example of this. With a contemporary curvy silhouette, the staircase is dressed in wood to appeal to guests of all ages. The exteriors bring in a play of light and shadow, thereby reducing the dependence on artificial light during the day for the public spaces.

Connecting today´s traveller to what matters most to them - space, culture and comfort - the Hyatt Regency Chandigarh effortlessly adds Le Corbusier´s design statement to the city´s skyline.
