Godrej’s U&US Home Design Studio forays into South India with its first store in Hyderabad

Godrej, catering to both homes and offices as segments, in the furniture category, launched the U&US Home Design Studio at Inorbit Mall in Hyderabad, yesterday. This is their first store in Hyderabad and in South India. U&Us is a unique concept that co-creates distinctive interior ecosystems by using patented technology. As part of this concept, the business is also committed to empowering local carpenters and designers. U&Us aims to provide job opportunities to over 100 carpenters and designers in South India. The flagship store in Hyderabad aims to transform spaces through the power of co-creation. U&Us users collaborate with studio designers and carpenters to co-create spaces that are agile, stylish and one that has a touch of their own personality. A team of experienced designers present at the store will guide customers through detailed space layout, décor and furnishing, thereby offering a 360-degree solution towards home renovation. The U&US offer customers an opportunity to create their own furniture designs by combining their ideas and our expertise at a state-of-the-art Design Studio. They employ an innovative and socially responsible business model to train and provide a perennial source of income for the carpenters, leading them towards a sustainable means of livelihood.

Kajaria uncovers its latest collection

Kajaria Ceramics, a manufacturer of ceramic vitrified tiles recently exhibited its latest collection - Impressions and Designer under its ceramic tile category. Impressions’ wall tiles are versatile and have a decorative design element that helps the user flaunt their imagination and envisage the style statement on the walls. A collection of this series is available in Reactive and Sugar Hone finish. The designer collection is crafted with unique Spanish applications with distinct surfaces that also have an intrinsic metallic finish, making these stylish tiles cater to all tastes and design aesthetics. Kajaria recently showcased these collections through a 25 days multi-city road show called 'Caravan'. The show travelled from Chandigarh, Dehradun and Varanasi to Kolkata and covered Haldwani, Ludhiana, Indore, Karnal, Jammu Srinagar, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Patna, Ranchi and Bhubaneswar.

Pantheon replica made with thousands of forbidden books

Thousands of prohibited books were used to create a replica of the Parthenon in Athens on a Nazi book-burning site in Kassel, Germany. The Argentinian artist Marta Minujín, takes a stand on censorship with this Athenian symbol of democracy. The site for this display is historically the same place where over two thousand prohibited books were burned in 1933 by Nazi sympathisers. The installation is a part of this year's Documenta 14 art festival in Kassel, a city in the north of central German state Hesse. The constructed design responds to a brief that asked contributing artists to explore the relationship between Kassel and Athens – the festival's partnering city.


Gucci Enters the Luxury Home Decor market

Gucci released illustrations of its newest venture into home decor items that it is soon to launch. Gucci decor will be the brand’s first entry into the home decor space and will be launched in September. Some of the designs revealed include Chiavari chair with velvet upholstery and a cat head design. The  scented candle and incense burner is created together with Manifattura Richard Ginori. Gucci joins other fashion brands including Fendi, Armani, and Ralph Lauren, which have expanded their reach into the home decor sector, offering furnishings, and more.

Apple unveiled interactive Homekit experiences in 46 of its retail stores, worldwide. Apple’s new retail stores, use the Home app from either an Apple Watch, iPhone or iPad to control devices like the Philips Hue light bulb, the Hunter ceiling fan and many others. One can virtually view the effect of the connected smart home systems by giving commands to the display system in the store. Outside of the U.S., Apple offers these experiences in 15 stores, including ones in the U.K., UAE, Germany, Mexico, Singapore and even their latest opened store in Taiwan. Non-interactive HomeKit experiences will be offered at all of Apple’s other stores — the ones without “The Avenue” window displays.

Jan Boelen named the curator of the Istanbul Design Biennial 2018

Jan Boelen, the art director of Z33 Contemporary Art House in Hasselt, Belgium, and the experimental design laboratory atelier LUMA has been named the curator of the Istanbul Design Biennial 2018. His experimental design approaches and innovative contemporary design has a trendsetting take in the industry. He is also in consultative committees of several institutions such as the V&A Design Museum in Dundee in Scotland and the Holland Creator Industrial Foundation. He was the curator of the 24th Ljubljana Design Biennial in 2014. Organised for the fourth time by Istanbul Culture and Art Foundation, the Istanbul Design Biennial will take place between September 22nd and November 4th,  2018.

Shortlist for The World Architecture Festival released

The world’s largest architectural awards program, The World Architecture Festival released its shortlist for the 2017 round of awards. The recently revealed awards shortlist includes architectural practices from 51 nations, and projects spanning 68 countries. The awards are divided across 30 categories of architecture, with finalists to go onto separate awards in the building, landscape and future project categories respectively. A total of 43 Australian projects has made the 2017 WAF shortlist, 30 of which appear in the building category. All shortlisted practices for the 2017 World Architecture Festival are now invited to present their projects at an event to be held in Berlin from 15 to 17 November this year. From there, category winners will go on to compete for either the World Building of the Year, Future Project of the Year, or Landscape of the Year. This year’s awards have drawn around, 924 project entries, representing an 18 percent increase from last year.
