Light it up!

Oct 18, 2017

Lights are one of the most important elements in a room. They are not only decorative but also contribute to a room’s overall mood. Inappropriate lighting can make a space dull or overly bright. Based on one’s needs, lights have to be carefully chosen from the different available types. The three main lighting needs for every space are ambient, task and accent lighting. While ambient light provides a room with overall illumination, task lighting directs light to certain places like reading or writing areas. Accent lights are used to highlight specific objects and their function is quite different from the other two.

To ensure that the lighting in a space is appropriate, it is essential to create a combination of lights, also generally known as layering lights. Mamta Mehta, Co-Founder, The Whiteteak Company, suggests that lighting should be chosen according to function. “Avoid a single light source as it casts shadows on the face; instead, install sconces. For an overhead light, choose a longer, horizontal fixture instead of one with a single bulb.” Another common mistake that people make is using the wrong size of lighting fixture. Anu Mehta, Co-Founder, The Whiteteak Company, gives some timeless designer tips to help users choose the right light. “As a measure, the bottom of a pendant light should be 30 to 36 inches above a kitchen island. The bottom of a chandelier should be 66 inches from the floor in a dining room. When sitting next to a table lamp, the bottom of the shade should be at shoulder height.”

For those with already set homes, an additional floor lamp or a wall lamp should suffice. To indulge in a festive mood, however, opt for the decorative varieties available in both. Theme-based perforated shades, a quirky handle, intricate flowery overlays or even under-shadowed effects are a go-to this festive season. Amit Shastri, Principal Architect, Amit Shastri Architects & Interior Designer, comments on how accent lighting can be used in a space. “When you want to highlight certain features in your living room, like a sculpture, textured walls or a painting, accent lighting is the way to go. Recessed, adjustable lights directed to points of interest or under-cabinet lighting in a display case highlighting selected objects are good ways of using accent lighting.”

Pendant lights with fabric shades are passé. Rustic lights are the new talk of the town. In the pendant light category, copycat bulbs finished in low polish are in vogue. Scattered in large clusters, it is already a hospitality sector favourite.

Using innovative ways of lighting to highlight specific furniture pieces like a bar counter or dressing table can go a long way in enhancing the look of a space. The festive season is an appropriate time for socialising and inviting visitors over. An ideal combination of illumination to support the mood and activities is absolutely essential.
