A Golden Egg in the middle of Sweden!

The golden solar egg sauna

This golden egg came out of nowhere to surprise us! In the quiet town of Kiruna of Sweden, this egg has become a social figure in itself! Kiruna is right now experiencing a radical change, which includes a huge move for the entire town. This is so that the mining organisation LKAB can remove a greater amount of the iron ore that is downwards underneath the town. The iron mineral has been extracted since the nineteenth century and is an imperative factor in the economic growth of Sweden. This is also a central earning activity for the small town of Kiruna. In short no mine, no town. The Swedish craftsman pair was appointed by designer Riksbyggen, Bigert and Bergström to outline a dedicated social figure for the town after occupants voiced feelings of losing group soul after their migration due to the mining projects.

A view from the inside

The entire town is being moved a few kilometres eastbound into a master plan created by White Arkitetker, which will enable digging to proceed for the next 20 years. The craftsmen's reaction was to plan a five-meter-high by four, broad brilliant sauna as a meeting place for inhabitants. Sunlight based Egg is included 69 isolate bits of gold-plated stainless-steel sheets, which meet up to shape the multifaceted oval. Found 145 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland, the egg-molded frame is expected to make reference to the atmosphere, with the frigid surroundings reflected in the brilliantly reflected surface.

The heart shaped structure inside the sauna

The mining raised serious questions about its environmental and social impact. Because of a commission from Riksbyggen, Bigert and Bergström have made a sculptural chamber as an egg-molded sauna that has quite recently been introduced at Luossabacken in Kiruna, Sweden's northernmost town. Solar Egg has become as a social figure where nearby individuals and guests to the town can meet and discuss their difficulties. In the cold atmosphere of Lapland, the sauna involves a key position, as a space for warmth and reflection. The egg shape is in sync with it serving the purpose of thought and discussion in the cold weather. The warmth in the egg can help generate new ideas to save the town, making it a hatchery of sorts. The venture is a continuation of the specialists’ technique to fuse the atmosphere into the experience of the work of art which was started with the Climate Chambers in 1994.

the elements made in the workshop

The egg is made out of stainless brilliant mirror sheeting, its multifaceted frame separating the surroundings that it reflects into a variety of representations. Scene, mine, town, sky, sun and snow are here consolidated into a divided picture that can summon the relationship with its reflective outer cover. The egg's inside has been framed out of wood, with the divider boards and floor decking made out of pine and the seats of aspen. In the focal point of the egg stands the wood-warmed, heart-formed sauna stove made out of iron and stone. The temperature inside the egg fluctuates in the vicinity of 75° and 85° Celsius.
