To the land of light

Nov 16, 2017

Located in the foothills of the Andes Mountain, outside of Santiago, The Bahá'í Temple of South America is an architectural feat.

The reflective pools

Toronto-based Hariri Pontarini Architects were the hands behind this structure that took 14 years design in the design stage. The process involved hand sketches, physical models and even the use of digital tools. The temple is surrounded by mountains, reflecting pools and tall native grass fields, making it an architectural pilgrimage of sorts.

The idea behind the unique look of the temple is that its structure didn’t have to be associated to any particular iconography. The temple focusses on a play of light. The swirling shape of the exterior in inspired by the Sufi dancers and Bamboo baskets are the inspiration behind the orb shape.

The interiors

The exterior consists of nine identical, torqued wings built using slim-profile steel members and nodal connections. Each of the wings rests on columns on elastomeric seismic isolators and concrete rings. The cast glass exterior was custom made for this project, that was developed over a period of four years in Toronto. It uses over 1000 pieces of curved and flat glass. The cladding material was chosen carefully to capture and express light.

The translucent marble used in the interiors were sourced directly from quarries in Portugal. A central oculus is suspended from the inside. The light of the exterior gets shifted to the interiors according to the changing colours of the day sky.

The day and night lights

The idea was to achieve an interplay of light in complexities reflected in its natural surroundings. The still and intimacy offered by this focus on light offer a perfect sanctuary.
