Vycle your troubles away

Redefining the next generation of vertical travelling, the Royal College of Art’s Innovation Design Engineering Masters program offers the experience of vertical transport with a twist. While walking up the stairs is always a task, cycling is more fun. So why not cycle upstairs, literally, vertically?!

The vycle

Defying the quintessential elevators, the vertical cycle or vycle is an excellent opportunity to stay fit while engaging with this new age idea of vertical transport. Designed by Royal College of Art graduate Elena Larriba, Vycle is a pedal-powered, vertical transportation system that offers a space-saving alternative to lifts and stairs. The system balanced using counterweights requires the person to continuously cycle in order to balance out his own weight. One can adjust the amount of effort one wants to put in by adjusting the gears on the system similar to those used on a bike.

inside tall buildings

In tall buildings, walking up stairs exhausts the user while lifts use too much electricity. In space-starved cities that are going to see a boost in infrastructure, space for stairs and lift areas can be saved by the usage of this system. This system can also be used in the building process itself. It is suitable for retrofitting and temporary instalments like those required while using cranes and scaffoldings. For older construction workers, rather than using long ladders, this is a safer technique to travel past the connecting wires and system to avoid mishaps.
